Know the booking type
Check whether all legs share one booking or use separate tickets. Separate journeys may require baggage collection, check-in again and entry formalities, even for a same-day departure.
Allow a buffer
A delay on the first flight affects the next. Check the carrier or airport’s minimum connection time, then allow for terminal or airport changes and your own needs. A search result’s connection time is not suitable for every traveller.
Connection protection
Read seller and carrier conditions for missed connections. A through booking differs from a broker’s connection guarantee; check exclusions and how to request help.
Documents and the return
Check transit or entry visa rules with the relevant official authority before choosing a route. Repeat the check for the return, which may use different airports or connection times.
Write the connection as a sequence
List arrival at the first airport, required checks, baggage collection if applicable and the next departure gate. With separate tickets, ask the seller who is responsible if the first flight is delayed. Do not assume the second airline will rebook automatically. If the airport changes, separate road travel from procedures at each airport.
When extra time is worth considering
Compare the saving with the consequences of missing a connection: accommodation, transfers, a replacement ticket and possibly entry formalities. Late-night arrivals or travelling with children can make a short connection tiring even if it appears possible on paper. Ask the seller before buying if connection protection and its conditions are unclear.
